When I have my heating installed in the new house I'm going to insulate all the pipework under the floor and in chases etc. In my current house where the pipes cross joists in notches they have some sort of awful hairy fibrous material around them to prevent that awful expansion clicking I assume. And it works. We never can hear when the heating has come on or off. No clicking at all. What is suitable to use for this purpose today? Or could I just carry on the insulation and squash it into the notches? Doesn't feel right.

Thanks for that.

Ok I'm going to be prepping pipe runs for my plumber. I want to insulate all the heat pipework once done, so I'm conscious that I need to leave a gap between the pipes where they run through notches in joists to leave space for insulation. Does this mean I should run the flow and return under separate boards where they cross joists in order not to weaken the boards? Otherwise I'm going to need massive notches. Or am i missing something?

Depends on pipe, joist and board sizes.

Just make sure you follow the standards on notches and spacing and don't notch where one would traditionally hit a nail in the board.
