If I need to add 100mm roll insulation to a stud wall what should the thickness of the wall be?

Should it be less than 100mm for a tight fit, more for ventilation or same size as insulation
 
Use 100mm x 50mm for the stud wall to accept the 100mm insulation, no need for ventilation.
 
Where is this wall Alan? Is it external or internal? And why are you insulating it - for sound or thermal?
