ashathene cable which was the first pvc cable (late 60s) if you ignore the rubber insulated ashathene sheathed that is, was affected by just about everything.

and water does degrade it, it was the insulation used to sheath paper insulated cable by BT, after they used lead apparently(main ducts installed in the 60s outside my house) and BT are there every few months replacing 100m or so
