our house is 5 years old with the plasterboard held on to the walls with dobs of plaster,maybe a gap of 30/40mm between the board and the wall,would it help if i filled this with polystyrene balls?thanks

Non-starter I reckon. Even if the gap is uniform 30/40mm - which is highly unlikely - I think it would be almost impossible to get any kind of reasonable distribution of balls. And, in reality, the gaps are likely to average a lot smaller. Sounds like a lot of work and hassle for a relatively small gain to me.
