Interconnecting Mains Fire alarms - different types?

We need 3 interconnecting mains powered fire alarms for our extension. I would prefer battery backed up ones for safety.

What is the practical differences between Photo Optical, Ionisation, Photoelectric and mains heat alarms?

And where would you use each type?

Keep to the same make for the various types. The method of interlinking is not the same for all makes and mixing different makes on the same system MAY work but needs some careful evaluation of the inter linking.

It may be just one wire but on that wire the voltage to trigger one make may not be compatible with the alarm state voltage of another make
