Looking to replace this single gang intermediate switch in the hall. The replacement intermediate switch is labeled 1,2,3,4 with what I think is a cross over design so 1 and 4 would match and 2 and 3.

Current setup is
l1 black brown sleeve , l1 grey brown sleeve ,l2 black brown sleeve , l2 grey brown sleeve.

So
L1 black to 1
L1 grey to 4
L2 black to 2
L2 grey to 3

Add additional earth wire from back box for additional safety

Try it and it if doesnt work try it the other way.

That didn't work tripped when I turned the power back on

It's a tight 25mm box so there's a chance something got caught , the earth is also tight in the corner. Added another photo to to confirm the logic is still the same

Yes - it doesn't matter what they call each terminal - it could be Q, Z, 5 & @.

One cable goes to one end (top) and the other cable goes to the other end (bottom)
It doesn't matter which way round each of the two wires in each cable goes.

Thanks both for your help , second attempt and it worked fine so might have just caught before.

Does mean I'm going to need to swop out a number of switches for a 35mm back box.

It needs 35mm , also recommended on the website as it fits flush unlike the existing switch
