I can get a Washer stalk for £6 on ebay so I wont bother testing that

If I disconnect the Windscreen motor from the wiring how do I test the
three speeds of the motor?

could it be the mechanical linkage "sticking" ?

Yes it could be to tight causing the overload protection in the wiper motor to open. The motor will work fine when it cools down only to stop again if it takes to much effort to work the wipers.

hmmm, it happens when the engine is cold too - first thing.

I'm thinking it might be an earthing problem.

The wiring diagram for the wiper motor shows four wires going in - labelled E,R,C and D, colour codes white, yellow, green, black/violet and diameters 1.5mm

From the motor is just a line with no details - does that signify the motor is earthed to the bulkhead/car?

Thanks troutybrown
I need to get under the bonnet first to check if it is a bed earth connection - once I get an answer to

many thanks anyway

well I've been under the bonnet and disconnected the plug to the motor.
From the plug to earth I get the following voltage results

pos1 parked, pos2 delay wipe, pos3 slow wipe, pos4 fast wipe

wire stalk pos 1 stalk pos 2 stalk pos 3 stalk pos 4
white 0 0 0 12.32
yellow 11.58 12.32 12.32 0
green 11.58 11.58 11.58 11.58
Blk/V 12.32 12.32 12.32 12.32

As I get volts to earth from each wire I guess its NOT an earth fault.

didnt test screen wash as thats working
