Internal door

We're replacing a full size glass panel (170cmx54cm), in an old internal door, with something other than glass, but don't know what to use. We plan to paint it white to match the surround.

We have managed to remove the glass in one piece without damaging the frame.

Please could anyone suggest what to use eg hardboard, plywood, timber etc for the panel so that it is the right strength for the job.

Plywood would be a good choice, the thicker the better.
