Is a lintel required

I have a converted bungalow with room in roof. I want to add an access door/panel to access the loft space. Basically a loft hatch but in a wall not a ceiling. I'll use a steel one from Jupiter Blue as used elsewhere in the house.

What do I need to consider? Insulation and draught proofing obviously. Do I need fire rated? I wouldn't for one in the ceiling.

What about a lintel? The wall is single skin hollow terracotta block. It is structural in that it has been built up to the purlin.

I've read that lintels aren't necessary up to 600mm width of opening? If I do need something I've seen catnic make a meter box lintel which is basically 90x90x2 angle iron. Or I've seen flat bar in a mortar joint used for fireplaces. Would you bother propping centrally or just go for it?

If the purlin spans the opening not bears on it, then a lintel is not required.

However if you are supporting masonry above the opening, then a lintel should be used.
