i got a peice of wood from a friend he had it because the guy who lived in the house before he bought it left it under the shed.
the peice of wood has teak with the length written on the end of it but i have my doubts.
it was very easy to cut and sand and work with in general it didnt seem hard at all the short teeth saw went straight through it and so did the jigsaw and it sanded really easy too.
the sawdust was like light brown muscovado sugar it was fine and held together so i am assuming it had resin in it.
i will upload some pics with links of after sanding but before oiling(i used teak oil) and after oiling.

before sanding:

Doubt if it was teak if it was easy to cut. Did it smell unpleasant when you were machining it?
Looks and sounds a bit like keruing to me. But could be any one of a number of tropical hardwoods. Difficult to tell from an image.

no smell at all

Could teak or Lauan which is a cheaper look a like, is it important to know which hard wood it is?

Teak is an oily heavy heart wood and usually has a brown to yellow ochre colour, with occasional darker brown bands, and tends to shed water, due to oils, not a reddish open texture wood (damp remains in pores) as your images appear to show.

Your wood is probably Meranti, also known as Lauan (as Foxhole said) or Philippine Mahogany and Shorea - the generic name of the tree.
