The original post was a question of curiosity of whether anyone has ever felt that strongly about anything to go to extremes to express it. Personally I haven't...not yet anyway.

I'm with you Kev, all the way (well except the tattoo, needles, pain etc) Shutting down the coal mines a good idea, right. So now we're reliant on foerign fuel imports when we have 300 years of coal beneath our feet. Ok, I admit it is sulphurous coal, but with a bit of science and engineering (oh, no bu**er we decided they were awful grease monkeys and decided they weren't valuable or wanted) we could be energy exporters. But now our great situation.

I agree, it does seem a curious way of going about business. You forgot to mention importing foreign workers! But that's for another thread.

I have no problem with foreign workers, to take jobs that either cannot or won't be filled by national workers.

But where on earth is the cost saving in outsourcing loads of jobs, sure it may save the company in question a bit of money, but surely in the broader sense of the economy it is ridiculous.

Skilled workers having

a) lost their job. Reduce revenue receipts.
b) possible retraining - Costs
c) Potential benefits costs.
d) Retained worker in lower paid job - Reduced revenue receipts.

All adds up to negatives in the broader economy.

You can build a coal fired power station in about 18 months. A nuclear one in about 18 years, so the coal can still be used if needed - but it seems no-one wants it. That's why the pits closed.
