svouts, good evening.

What do the steel pipes do? is it some sort of a chimney flue?

Looks like some sort of Mineral fiber?? BUT?

To be sure I would suggest that you take a sample and have it checked out by a Laboratory specialising in Asbestos.

Until you have the all clear, treat with caution, Asbestos pops up in all sorts of unwanted areas of construction.

My eye says it's not. Would I get it tested before disturbing it? Yes!

But someone has been at it...?

magiclintel, Hi.

To be absolutely certain, best to have the material tested.

OK looks like a fibrous lagging but may have some sort of ACM [Asbestos Containing Material] incorporated?

What are the steel pipes doing?

Ken.

Agree with all above looks very similar to material in some old office ceiling tiles which can contain asbestos.

In one place must me an old chimney flue going through a cupboard towards the roof and in another area in the attic must be an old central heating pipe.

Looks very suspect to me (the white layer flush with the metal pipe itself).

Get the whole sample tested; full depth through the insulation, from skin to pipe.

You know, you cannot tell if anything contains asbestos by inspection with the naked eye alone simply because individual asbestos fibres are tool small to be resolved by the human eye; they are far finer than a human hair. Location and age are a better indicator - the amosite (or brown asbestos) that HawkEye refers to was banned in 1985 and asbestos in buildings was outlawed completely at the end of 1999, so if this item is less than 19 years old it won't be an ACM, if it is older it might well be. If in doubt get it tested, ideally through a UK lab (as opposed to an American one, who have been shown on the past to be inaccurate)

The insualtion appears to have the corrugation that is typical of asbestos insulation roll, rather than just the fibres of rockwool or quilt.

Check if the person that has already cut it is still alive and in good health
