Hi,

I have my acs, but haven’t utilised it fully until recently, so please be gentle.

So I have read your diy gas faq section. I wanted to know if when you remove a boiler cover on a boiler with the air intake inside, eg Vaillant ecotec or ecomax, to renew a temperature dial, or to wire in a thermostat, maybe even just charge the expansion vessel, is this claaaes as needing to carry out reg 26.9? I’ve read the manual and it just states to carry out functional check, but I usually just ldf the gas pipe inside and check the flue. Surely I don’t need to gas rate, fga or measure heat input?

Any advice appreciated.

As far as I am concerned, taking the case off is one of the actions to kick off the requirement of 26/9.

So I get a job to renew one of those simple temp dials, and I then say to customer I now have to gas rate your appliance? They ask how come, I presume I just say because I need to check the safety of the appliance?

As far as I knew it was for any gas carrying components, but I guess I’m incorrect in thinking that?

By removing the casing, you are effectively accessing part of the flue system by breaking the room seal on the appliance. Would you remove any other part of the flue and replace it without doing 26.9 checks?

I’m not reluctant, just trying to get a better understanding. I work for a company, whereby they safety check the appliances annually and I’ve had several responses to my question, including one from vaillant.

My company - it’s like an mot on a car, no need to gas rate as you wouldn’t for changing a car battery, etc.

Vaillant technical - you’re not breaking into the combustion chamber so no need to gas rate

My (albeit hazy) interpretation from vaillant installation instructions - check the gas isn’t leaking, check the flue isn’t leaking, make sure no water is leaking.

Your response - as above

Hence the confusion

26/9 does not specifically mention working on gas parts. It says whenever you work on you must..,,,

Cannot do a cut and paste as on phone - too awkward.

undertrained, remember if anything goes wrong with the boiler after your repair, you would have been the last person to have worked on it. After your repair ensure the appliance is safe to leave operating or the gas industry unsafe procedures have been carried out is your responsibility.

keeps the gas user safe and the gas operative out of sh-1t. Your employer also has a duty of care

Well this has certainly cleared things up for me. Many thanks for all the replies. Top men (y)

We don’t muck about in our house - we have a G3 qualified man come round and run our bath each night - too risky touching pressurised hot water systems......

undertrained When you get more training up to rgi level and are competent to work on gas appliances. do yourself a favour and specialise in certain products or installations. Then you are not just a regular on a long list of gas service technicians, your a specialist £££ !.

Tbh thats not really relevant to this topic  you may wish to do an edit (y)

Always a good idea to get the front cover off a vaillant to see where it’s leaking from today.
