i often wonder that when the wife has all four gas cooker rings going.

I certainly would not be using this fire as products of combustion are likely to enter room instead of chimney. Good chance it will make you drowsey, even kill.

Do not use that until you have had it checked properly by an RGI.

The damper plate should be fixed permanently open and you have no idea what condition the flue is in.
