We get quite a build up of frost on our mini freezer as shown in the photos. We do get rid of it from time to time but this time we’ve let it go a bit far so it’s not always quite that bad,

but it always returns fairly quickly especially at the top left corner. Anyway, was wondering if this is normal or should we invest in a new model?

( It’s a LEC U50052W, about 12 years old but has always suffered from frost and there don’t seem to be any self defrosting mini’s available)

It's either being left open, or more likely the door seal is damaged and is not airtight any more.
A new door seal can be obtained for a lot less than a new freezer.

It's normal, go back to your old routine for defrosting. Should be done twice a year

Yes I have same unit, and it did the same. I now use it as a fridge, with an external thermostat, I found it used the half the amount of power to my fridge/freezer, which was silly when the fridge/freezers freezer alone was 4 times the size of mini freezer, so simply not worth having any more, it was used for late mothers ready meals, as had a very low so small fridge/freezer, as she was in a wheel chair, and the carers would transfer from mini freezer on top of fridge/freezer down to where she could reach them.
