Is this right?

I thought it was lead that had gone through the roof.

I'll get my coat.

I was thinking it was steel which had gone off the rails.

[Shall I hail a taxi for both of us...?]

The sparki got back to me today stating that he would carry out the inspection and that the certificate would last for 5 years. Is this the normal time, I heard somewhere that its usually ten? Hes not asking for any money upfront either which is something I guess.

Inspection certificates don't 'expire' - and, like MOT certificates, may not accurately reflect the state of an electrical installation even the day after they were issued. It's essentially up to anyone asking to see a certificate (e.g. a potential house purchaser) to decide how recent a one they want to see.

Kind Regards, John.

Well I asked him for a ten yr cert. & he sent me a text stating that he's busy doing other work at the mo and could not do anything before Xmas. All seems bit fishy to me.

Sounds like he got fed up with your 'suggestion' of mis trust- the work has to be done with some fairness for both sides.

Simply put, you should have got 3 quotes, you should have writen a firm spec and issued that to each potential contractor. Then you would have got 3 quotes based on the same spec and at that point you could raise any price issues you have.

Reading between the lines, and with the tone of your posts it sounds like you would be a PITA to work for. I think you need to accept that a seasoned spark has to retrain, has to get insurance, a scheme membership, a van, tooling, testing equipment and other over heads- and isn't just a 'lacky' who will work for no profit.

Do you work for no profit?

Well I wasn't a PITA when I fought for my country, so its a bit rich to make that comment to someone you don't even know. I got three quotes and I asked the same Q's to the mid range price bracket contractor and he didn't have a problem answering them, hence my reason for going with him. Oh and he didn't call me every day asking if I was ready for the work to be done.

In answer to yr question Chri5, yep I have worked for no profit. Its something called pride.
