I am currently tiling a bathroom in a property that is going to be a rental,a sparky has done a rewire and has trunked 10mm up by the door frame in the bathroom for the shower.

Is this ok??

Not wanting to undermine you both, because I agree theres nothing wrong with you... but we actually had a job failed by the NIC inspector for running cables through a bathroom! The supervisor told him it was rubbish and they made a big thing about it.

there's a difference with routing a cable in trunking to a shower, and routing a cable THROUGH a bathroom in trunking..

Did you ask the inspector which regulation in BS7671 prohibits it?

I must be honest and say I don't know the exact details about this job.
Yes my boss asked the inspector to point out where in 'the book' it says we can't do that, but obviously he couldn't.

And why would it make a difference if you were routing to an item in the room or not?

Agreed !

I think the NICEIC inspector was interpreting the recommendarions incorrectly. In my opinion it is bad practice to route cables through a Bathroom that are concealed [ unless going directly to an accessory or equipment] for obvious reasons. In..the case of surface trunking this is
not an issue.unless it is mettallic that is .[Very unlikely I Know }

It doesn't make any difference.

It is best practice to keep to a bare minimum the amount of wiring in a bathroom, but nothing actually prohibits you from running a 6" x 6" trunking full of cables through the bathroom if you wanted to.

I agree its obviously something you avoid, but as far as I'm aware I see no breach of 7671.

Im not sure whether cables were in surface mt or run beneath floorboards. Either way I think he was a jobsworth!

522.3.1 A wiring system shall be selected and erected so that no damage is caused by condensation or ingress of water during installation, use and maintainance. The completed wiring system shall comply with the IP degree of protection relevant to the particular location.

NOTE: Special considerations apply to wiring systems liable to frequent splashing, immersion or submersion.
?
perhaps he felt that the steam in the room would condense on the cables and run down them into the CU below.. ?

Wasn't there a requirement for the wiring systems only to be put into the zones of a bathroom if they were supplying accessories within the zones? It might have been a 16th edn requirement.

Possibly, sounds like a great longshot mind.
But as I don't know the job I can't comment!

I've just had a read of section 601 in the 1992 edition, and can see no reference to it :?
