I thought I read on here such fittings are illegal.

The things themselves are not illegal, the problems are when people fit them - in the vast majority of situations there is no realistic option for installing them and complying with regulations.

No they're not OK, and if fitted they either can't work properly, or you risk you and your neighbours drinking diluted fanny batter from the last person that used such a device.

You're dealing with category 5 waste. Garden hose becomes category 2 (IIRC).
