Hi I wondered if anyone could help please? Until yesterdy my boiler ws working fine but this morning I realised we had no hot water. I checked the boiler and realised that the lights had gone out on it. The control panel on the wall where you set the timer etc still has power to it and our gas is still working as we have a gas hob. I read the manual and followed the instructions on how to turn the boiler on which I did but it still wouldn't work, it's as though it's getting no power. I wondered if anyone had any experience or advice for this problem? Typically, my friend who is a plumber is away on holiday until Tuesday and I'm loathe to pay the £192 fee that British gas quoted over the phone if it's just something simple that can be fixd cheaply.

Any advice greatly appreciated. Many thanks

You need to work out where the boiler gets its power from. Often a switched fused spur. This may have been turned off or the 3A fuse blown.

There are other boiler engineers, British Gas are only one company.

Is an issue as bad as a problem?

In my day, people had straightforward problems. Now its all issues, issues, we all fall down.

Suppose that's progress. Things are getting better, evident in the fact that issues have taken over from problems.

So you dont think it could be something as simple as the motorised valve motor.

OP
Is it just the hot water not working have you tried the heating to see if its also not working

An issue is MUCH worse than a problem lol.

Neither the heating or the hot water will work. The boiler is just dead, it normally has a light on even when the heating/hot water is not in use but it is not alight now. Thanks

Then get someone else, but be careful as some will charge for looking at it whether they fix it or not.

It's a gamble. It's quite likely to be a pcb, going on history, but it could be something simple.
A pcb + fitting would cost more than the BG fixed price, probably more like £250 - £280.

Of course an issue is worse than a problem - it needs therapy!

no because there is no display

I think the SW fused spur has been turned off!

That will be free to fix!

Of course thats based on an OP who has no idea of what to look for and isn't doing much looking.

Its the OP who should be checking the SFS as thats free.

I had a trainee who changed a gas valve because the gas supply was turned off.

Someone else I know removed the DHW NTC and the pressure of the mains water threw it across the room! I dont remember if he went to look for it or kept his finger on the hole.

I dont seem to remember that turning the valve off under the boiler was in the equation.

OP is likely to call someone out, then complain about the cost of turning the spur, boiler, controls or whatever back on.

The control panel on the wall where you set the timer etc still has power to it
bit of a giveaway

Ideal1, what is a bit of a giveaway? That's it's the fused spur because it's still on at the wall? I know absolutely nothing about boilers etc but if someone would kindly tell me what a fuse spur is I will check if it's working. Thanks
