Issues with dusk to dawn lights

I would agree, however the Government says it must turn off in daylight hours. So it seems we do need to have a control even if not economical to do so.
I think 75lm/W is at the low end of efficiency for LEDs, so it ought to be possible to install lights so efficient that manual controls will do.
 
Wasn't there a theory once that for commercial newbuilds, you'd save money by not paying for light switches and all the cabling thereof to be installed and just have all the lighting permanently on? I think the life-shortening powering on for fluorescents may also have been factored in.
My porch light has, over the years, has a Venner time switch, and various lamps with photocells.

When the final one failed, I fitted a simple outdoor lamp, with a 4W LED lamp and no automatic controls.

The purchase and running costs are less that the lifetime costs of an automated lamp.
