If these trials don’t conclude, if there is no verdict, if Netanyahu is not found guilty, he can run for elections in October. So now he is kicking the can again. There is no active war at the moment, but he can still invoke security and so-called diplomatic reasons and it has been his get-out-of-court-free card, used time and again. The judges have yet to challenge that kind of presentation from his lawyers, to the frustration of the prosecutors.
In fact, we have seen incidents where the trial was ongoing, Netanyahu was in court, and then a sealed envelope would be presented to the judges invoking security and diplomatic reasons, and he would be allowed to exit achieving the same goal of delaying the trials further.
Netanyahu is facing several corruption charges. He denies being guilty.
He has asked for a pardon. He has even asked for Trump’s help in pressuring the Israeli president to grant a pardon without admitting guilt and that has not worked out. So delay is the next best thing.
