Job Advert: what does "bar at £xx,xxx" mean?

Hi,

I've seen job adverts which state a salary range followed by "bar at £xx,xxx" where the bar figure is lower than the top end of the salary range.

I've never known what this bar figure refers to or how it is calculated. I'm sure somebody can educate me on this one.

say a job is advertised at £30,000-£40,000, with a bar at £35,000, i think this means you will only earn up to £35,000 until you have completed x years service or attained additional quals, after which you could earn up to a max of £40,000

it`s a not illogical way of saying "That`s all you `re not unrealistically going to get as remuneration"

we have a low/mid/max thing on our pay scales.... nobody ever gets on to max... you can get promoted to the next level and still be on less than the max of your old grade...
