Joining two houses

Hi own a mortgaged detatched home the house next door also detatched has come up for sale is it possible to join the two is planning permission needed?

That is not the case, i have done this exact thing, it all depends on how you intend to join them.

We own two houses attached at the kitchen and stairs. We had planning granted to remove the entire central wall but chose to just knock through the kitchen and the top of the staircase simply because removing the entire wall was far to expensive.

Use a good architect to draw up a proper structural plan to ease the application

So you want to build between two detached houses (making a sort of terrace) and then knock through to make one very large house?

Planners are usually reluctant to allow merging houses as it reduces the number of dwellings available. You might get permission if you can show that there is a shortage of larger houses, but you then also face the objection that the scale of the resulting dwelling will be out of character for the neighbourhood.
