I am wanting to learn how to plaster as i did i bit in my mates house and it turned out very well once painted so am on tracks to learn myself now.

Can anyone put up some info on what tools are for what? When to use undercoat plaster and what is skim coat? and any other info what would help me.

Also is there any good books or link to watch for plastering etc etc?

Many thanks for help and your time.

Well we can start with the basic tools:

Buckets for mixing and water

Plastering trowel - Made from Stainless for applying and smoothing down plaster

Plastering corner trowel – Produces a better corner edge to edge finish

Hawk - A hand held flat base from which plaster can be more easily applied

Plaster mixing tub or bucket

Mixer drill and paddle to mix the plaster

Plastering float – A lightweight trowel to help create a good top coat finish

Derby for levelling base coats

Straight edges, speaks for it's self.

Paint brush – For wetting down dry surfaces usually by flicking the water from the brush rather than direct contact

A roller for applying water or PVA to surfaces

Pad saw or drywall saw – For cutting holes in, or trimming plasterboard / drywall

Straight edge – To check the finished surface is flat

Stanley knife – For cutting plasterboard / drywall to size

Hacksaw or snips – For cutting angle bead to length

Spirit level – For checking the finished surface is level

Hammer – for just about anything ;)

Screw gun or cordless, depending.

Hop up for getting up there.

Dustsheet – To protect floors, furnishings cover over doors etc..

Thistle Browning:

An undercoat plaster for solid backgrounds of moderate suction with an adequate mechanical key.

Thistle Bonding Coat:

Thistle Bonding Coat is an undercoat plaster ideal for smooth and low suction backgrounds.

Thistle Hardwall:

An undercoat plaster with high impact resistance and quicker drying surface. Suitable for application by hand or mechanical plastering machine to most masonry backgrounds.

A skim coat is the plaster finish coat.
Try this link some good info:

You will most likely find that the information given by the well versed and well mannered members in this forum will serve you better than any book or video, treat them nice and be good. Can't really direct you to a good book not sure there is one worth recommending.

If you browse through this lot, I am sure you will pick up some good points and maybe some bad ones too! Plasering vids

Hi guys,

Sorry but what does PVA mean? Am new to this and want to learn about plastering.

Many thanks Paul.

PVA is a solution that is applied to walls to reduce suction, this will help when applying plaster to walls as high suction walls can take the moisture out of the mix, which means it will dry to fast and crack and not bond correctly.
