Does any one know much about the C40 model? It seems to be giving me endless problems. We had it installed 4 years ago to service a large property.
Got a recent survey by British Gas who have disconnected it as they say the flue was push -fitted and should have been 'swept and solvent weld'. Also that the sealing gromits are missing.

Any advise on costs of putting right and if in fact what the British Gas people say , is correct?

MAny thanks

Allan

The common opinion amongst RGI's, is that Kestons are crap boilers.
The answer to your question about the flue is in your Service and Installation manual.

Your Service Company are right. The only fitting on the flue that should be commpression type the 1st connection to the boiler air inlet and flue discharge (for maintenance purposes) the rest should be long radius bends solvent weld type so they cannot be pulled apart. missing grommet should be replaced

P.S. you have my sympathy regarding installing a C40 in the first place!

I cannot comment on the type of pipe that you have used. But often the pipe for solvent weld and the type for push fit are different. So may all need replacing.

Perhaps about £84 plus about £15 per metre of pipe. Bit less if the pipe can be solvent welded.

How do you expect us to give you a budgetary price when you dont say if the flu is 1m or 25m?

You could report the Installers to Gas Safe and see if they will issue a defects notice to get it repaired at no cost to you.

It is really a very basic mistake! Makes me think they were not registered installers!

Not in NW6 is it?

Tony

Commonly Kestons are not installed to manufacturer instructions.

Solvent weld must not be used; it has to be solvent cement if it is to meet specification and thus Gas Safe standards.

Your options with the C40 are to repair the flue or replace the whole boiler. You will be repairing your C40 forever, so arguably you may as well bite the bullet now and save the money on gilding a turd with a new flue.

The flue and fittings also have to be mupvc or pvc-c. Upvc or abs are incorrect and classed as 'at risk' so if, and I suspect it will be, flued with these the entire flue needs replacing.

Kestons are unreliable expensive heaps of junk.

cut your losses, chuck it in a skip where it belongs and invest in something quality. No doubt it was installed as part of building work as they usually are. No half decent RGI would recommend a Keston to anyone but his worst enemy.
