i think a few of you lot have got youngish kids... do you supplement their schoolwork? Do any home teaching?
I try to push mine and practice reading and writing with the younger ones.. and harder maths etc with my eldest.

Anyone got any tips, or good resources e.g. websites etc?

Schools stopped doing the multiplication tables years ago and it shows in the younger generation now if they are working in the service industry. They cannot do mental arithmatic.
Get your children to start reciting the tables like we used to do from the very junior school upwards.

to be fair, our school does focus on the basics.... multiplication especially. What i don't get is all the new techniques for adding and subtracting..... counting back, blocking etc.

Ta for the link... don't know why i didn't think of the good old beeb.

Recently bought my daughter the Brain Training "game" for her Nintendo, and its great - its a daily challenge between us now to see who has the highest score of the day.

In addition, we ensure they read on a regular basis, complete homework on time, and set them additional challenges if they have the time to be bored.

yeah we got the brain train game too.... not too happy about the kids with a games console in their mitts all the time tho... am i a bad parent?

I do them half an hours morning work every school day that they do after breakfast... try to push them into areas that school haven't covered yet... not sure if i'm not pushing too hard...

Kids need their own time, and if this is a half hour on a games console - then I'm cool with that. Mine are on the go constantly throughout the week, with afterschool activities (Karate, swimming, cubs, guides, dancing/drama, football, cricket) and this is in addition to the school homework and socialising with friends.

No, i agree... where do you find a karate club in derbyshire?

My son goes to a club in Chesterfield. He's been a member for about 4 years, and I'm keen for him to continue working his way up the belts. It teaches great discipline, its good exercise, and he's gaining the skills to get himself out of trouble.

dont know about derbyshire but theres plenty of karate in karachi nowadays :)

Handy i live in chesterfield and Mrs martian is/was a blackbelt in Karate... where is the club? Queens park?

what day are they there?
(this is getting almost like a PM !)

Trains twice a week, as this is a requirement for grading. Miss too many sessions, and you can't grade. The training is behind closed doors, but the training sessions prior to grading are "open", so you get to watch them. Terry O'Neil took the last trainng session - I enjoy watching his sessions as he's a lot of time for the younger ones.
