Kitchen sink strainer question

should the strainer piece, the bit the plug fits into have a gasket either side of the sink unit itself......ie one under the strainer part and another on top of the bowl part, so the actual sink unit is sandwiched between gaskets. Ours looks to have only one, (underside) and seems to have had a sealant between the strainer bit and the upper side of the sink unit.......

Definitely have the thick gasket on the underside, and I put a good squidge of silicone on the topside.
