laminate flooring

I was thinking about buying a laminate flooring for my studio, but I read about the expansion gap needed at the walls and also between different rooms.
When I measure my studio, should I consider the gap expansion in the measurement? Confused here!

Whenever you do your measurements of the floor space you want any type of floor covering installed, you measure from wall to wall, to get the widest width and the longest length

With wooden flooring and the likes, you then add 5 - 7 % saw-waste, which you will have for for instance the last row (you might only need 1/4 of the board but still have to buy the whole board) and then you have to consider how the product you want is packed.

Say for instance your studio is 4 x 5 meters = 20 sq m floor space. Adding 7% means you need around 21.4 sq m of flooring. The product you want comes for instances in boxes of 2.15 sq m: 21.4 divided by 2.15 = 9.95 packs. Since you can only buy whole packs you need 10 = 21.5 sq m.

Then, when you install the floor itself you leave a minimum of 10mm expansion gap all around. Only then comes the gap into the equation, not when calculation the sq m or number of packs you need.

Wooden flooring is the same as laminate, assume I need to calculate the 5-7% more for laminate too?

I have had a good look at your site. However, I will be happier to visit my local DIY store or specialist supplier to have a good look before i buy. There are few around us in Brum. I will keep you guys posted how it goes..cheers

Hi SullySa, my daughter is planning to change the old laminate flooring in her flat with real wood flooring (for sure engineered wood flooring).

We have already visited a couple of stores, and after researching we have decided to buy from floors2go, it’s ok, not so expensive, people were fairly helpful.


WoodYouLike: your tips have been very usefull, I took all the measurement this morning, now time to chose which wood flooring and where to buy. My doughter likes walnut or ebony, I find both too dark for that small flat. any we will see.

Hi

I just ordered quite a bit of oak laminate from floors to go in aintree Liverpool. They seem to have a sale on at the moment and are also offering a further 20% off once your in store, so be sure to ask if they can do you a deal. The lad in the shop said they sent text messages to all customers registered with them offering the further twenty off, so well worth asking. Saved me a good few hundred on b&q prices and for a better laminate in my opinion.

Hi SullySA, don't worry for your laminate.

May daughter's flooring is very old and previous owner has pretty much destroyed it. There are spots everywhere ever and also some sign of burns. That's why she wants to change it, I completely agree.
