I'm going to build a new timber side hung garage door (pair). I want the bottom rail to be 9" deep, I'm afraid of using 9"x2" cos it might twist/ split later on, so I thought about gluing 3 lots of 3x2 together (ensuring the grain runs in opposite directions). Is this a good idea or am I just being a fartypants?

Laminating in this fashion is acceptable, providing you use a suitable glue,
I would also consider joining with biscuits, every couple of foot or so.
The best wood glue in my opinion is Aerolite 306, stronger than the actual wood itself, but not cheap.

Wotan.

Thanks Wotan, I was going to use waterproof resin W, but I'll get some of this aerolite stuff, I have a biscuit joiner so I'll use that too.
