Hi all,

Gone to change the 5 downlights in the bathroom after they no longer work and come across this. Can anyone advise how to wire this into LAP IP65? I can’t locate a shop that sells the version of downlight below so picked up LAP IP65 as best for bathrooms. Might this be a whole new wiring job for a spark to do, or a simple swap job?

Cheers.

I would think the right hand side terminal wires are the wrong way round.

How are the other lights wired?

And the left hand side ones need pushing in farther.
And the earth bare wires need connecting together even if not used.

Are they the old or new lights?

The grey sheath should be inside of the fitting like this

on the type in your picture you would have to bring the earth on the outside, not ideal but would be ok.

The pic is the old lights that I have pulled out. Never seen wiring like that so wasn’t even sure if it was safe to put a new down light in as stands. In this case just sheath the exposed earth and wire as usual then? That should be okay

Is that the old light and how you found it?

Might the purson who installed that - without the earths connected nor the strain relief on the cable sheath - have been responsible for other dangerous bodges in your home? If I were you, I’d be looking behind other light fittings etc. soon.

In the photo we can see an ‘N’ for neutral on the left pair of terminals. Can you see one on the right pair?

I take it those fittings are class II.

I take it they also have a snap on cover with a built-in cable grip,

Bit of a rubbish design not to incorporate provision for termination of more than one CPC.

I would tidy up the cable ends so that the sheaths lie nicely on the serrated area and the conductors are just long enough to terminate in the terminals. Could the CPC of one duck out through one of those holes and back into the other side so that both can be terminated together in the space to the right of the right hand terminals or the left of the left hand terminals in a block?

yeah the old fitting is L N N L which makes sense for the loop in loop out but seeing the state of the wiring wasn’t ideal when I thought it would be a simple swap out job

These from SF are loop in type, just check they are the right width for the existing aperture
