Hi Neal

512Mb ram is ok but would recommend going closer to 1gb rather than upgrading the processor.

The best way software wise is to backup all your data and reload everything from scratch (make sure you have disks for everything before you do this).

I know thats not always practical so here are a few tips:

1. Follow this guide: http://www.pcreview.co.uk/startup
2. tidy up your hard disk, unwanted files etc.
3. Do a virus / adware scan (this will take a little while)
4. Defragment the harddrive (always do this last)

Hope this helps!

Replacing the processor on a notebook is not really a viable option - even if you could get a suitable one.
The increased heat generated can play havoc with the unit and, for the effort and cost. just buy better off buying a new one.

Give the machine a spring clean. Even better, reformat and reinstall, but only the apps you actually need. It's surprising how much dross the machine collects over time.
