If using something like that first brown JB, there is a trick you can do if skilled with a knife - though from the sound of things, it'll be too late now.
Do NOT cut the cable you are tapping into. Very carefully remove a short length of sheath - but no more than the width of the JB. Then remove the screws from the terminals, lay out the cores, and strip only enough of the insulation to allow the cores to go into the terminals. This way, the "IN" and "OUT" cables are actually only one cable and you cut down the amount of copper in each terminal by a 1/3. It also means that other than over-tightening the screws a LOT (so they cut the cores), you can't have a bad connection between in and out cables/
The main problem is that you can't slip some green/yellow sleeving onto the earth core - any suggestions for that ?

Another tip with those JBs ...
The screws at pointy, and the terminals have a recess. So it can help if you fit the first cable and tighten the screws to form the first cable int the recess (and use a thin screwdriver to push the end down flat). Keep doing this as you add cables, and you'll find you can fit in cables that at first sight "don't fit" - you might find you have to help the cores into place with a small screwdriver first.
Of course, I've never filed the point off the screw

In the past I have found those miniature ratchet clamps useful for holding conductors in place whilst tightening the screws.
