Hi, I am about to order planed oak boards to use as window boards. I am ordering them from here:

www.venbros.co.uk/

The plan is to finish (sand, router edge and oil) the planed boards, then countersink screw them down to solid walls. a few of the boards are over 9" deep (largest is 275mm). the plan is to have them about 1 inch (22mm) thick. Is this a sound plan, or will I need to rout some anti cupping grooves into the back? I cant find any character oak window boards anywhere locally, without going to somewhere that charges an absolute fortune!

Any suggestions where I can get 275mm finished oak window boards from or any suggestions as to finish planed boards to make them more suitable? I am ok at DIY but hardcore DIY and routing joins between boards is a bit above my level.

Cheers. Will check them out thanks.

One quick question, if I were to try and manufacture these myself, using a router or biccy cutter, what is the maximum width of each board to prevent warping once the boards are in place? I was thinking for up to 300mm width, 2X150mm wide boards will do, or would it be best going for 3?

Having never attempted decorative woodwork, this would be a good first project. My main concerns would be with ensuring the edges were straight prior to jointing, any extra hints or tips?

Youd probably be better off (and cheaper) using oak veneered MDF. You'll certainly have no problems with movement of the finished window board and as always it's available, in widths quite a lot wider than you need (so no need to edge join anything). ;)

(Certainly worth considering)
