Hi there, my first post on here as im hugely confused!!
Ive recently purchased 27sqm of a really great specification 1800 x 130 x 14mm enginered dark stained/oiled oak boards to cover my downstairs living space as the existing boards are shabby and a mix of long/short/old/new/thick/thin etc.
Ive had a look through some posts on here as i want to lay it myself and want to know what type of underlay to get (if any) and if it requires glue or nailing.
Im just wanting some guidance from an expert on:
1) What type of underlay i should use on existing floorbaords, its ground floor so i would like something fairly quiet and perhaps with insulative qualities???
2) How i should secure the new boards to the existing floor? i see people say nailing or gluing on here mostly? Could someone advise on the best option for me and types of glue, or if nails i assume the length of the nail has to go through the underlay and into the existing floorboard?! sounds stupid but will nailing through the insulation defeat the object of insulation slightly?!!
3) I see some people have mentioned 'floating floors'...could someone define what this means and if this is suitable or not?
4) Also, i have a small area, maybe 1sqm where a fireplace used to be so therefore is cocnrete based, should i get a different underlay/securing method just for this area or will it not really matter?
Ive spent a small fortune on this floor (to me anyway) at over £30 sq/m, and am determined to do it myself but want to do the best job possible so any help would be greatly appreciated!
Many thanks guys, Lewis.
