Planning to 'landscape' the 'in-laws' garden for them soon and would appreciate some advice on laying sleepers as steps. The garden level is higher than the patio with a slope to the front edge which is where they want the steps. Is it just a case of cutting into the slope with a spade to make the steps and then lay the sleepers on top. Advice would be well appreciated.

cut into the slope. the sleeper can then be secured with 50 x 50 x 600 long timber pegs driven into the ground, and the sleeper fixed to them. Very easy to do

Thermo, thanks for advice. Would I put the pegs along the front edge, back edge or at the sides? Don't really want them on show and want the steps quite close.

Also, would you have any tips on putting spot lights into the sleepers?
