I need to lay new floor tiles on an existing cement floor, however the floor has been painted/lacqered for many years, and therefore a cement based adhesive will not work. I could use acid to remove the lacqer but this is not something I am enthusiastic about. Is there a floor tile adhesive which (not being cement based) would allow the laying of the tile direct to the existing surface. Thank you.

My apologies for posting this originally on "Floors" etc

I had a similar situation with laying tiles onto vinyl flooring.

I used an adhesive for porcelain tiles. I would think you could do the same.

May be best to see if you have any responses from more experienced tilers on this site. :)

Thanks for that. I will wait to see if I get any further advice. It also occured to me that laying on sealed concrete is not much different to laying on top of existing tiles. which people seem to do sometimes.
