saw plumber dothis a few years ago system was off heonly asked for a towel-then simply removed pump asmall amount of water escaped-hethen diconnected electrics andpump was off-then connected new one to electrics and tightened up top and bottom plpe connections andjobdone - i did not see him cut off water supply or turn any of the brass valve/taps one way or the other, is it this straight forward -- or is there a need to cut off water from some where in the system or the mains supply can anyone help and state if it is this straight forward regards -- barry109

namsag the water pump is outside boiler withconnections to ater pipe top and bottom big brass /copper connections shaped like cone which i assume are valves --what are they called and should they be renewed as part of job as look a little worn/old/and coated ln dirt gren stuff or do they jut need clean up when pup off

they are pump valves & must be turned off first. turn them off hard.
if they dont appear to be leaking dont worry that they are green.
the glands may be leaking a little. these can just be tweaked up or repacked if necessary.
if the pump is fitted with the pipework vertical loosen & crack the joint on the top one first. do not undo it totally. a little water will escape. if it keeps on leaking one or both of the valves isn't holding & the system will need draining & valves changing.

dont bother changing the valves if they are passing, chances are the next time you have to change the pump they will be passing again. save your self some money and forget about it.

--my computer keyboard is destroyed-using onscreen keyboard very slow with mouse so its in for repair /off line for ten days, thankfully still under warranty/courier picks it up tomorrow. you all agree to leave valves alone if possible. however back to pump if system shut down do i simply disconnect and nt turn off water supply at mains or any of the round brass taps located all around the water pump.is it just like isaw aplumber do just a towel to mop uppexcess water in plpes--thanks to all for help wil be back when computer fixed

If your valves are the ball type (you dont need a spanner to close them), chances are they will leak.

If 'gate type', crank em up hard and undo the top union on the pump. You may need a lump hammer and a big flat headed screwdriver to get it going. If that doesnt work, saw through them.... only if the valves work. Do this by removing the pump head.

Replace pump and smear the threads with loads of non setting silicole GREASE. Undo valves and hey presto.

If valves are not holding, bung it, or drain down and change the valves for gate type irrespective of what you have already.

good quality ball valves do not leak.

Pray tell us a good make of ball type pump valves that don`t leak,
In nearly 30 years and seeing dozens of different types i have only ever had one that did not leak and that was the ones that came with Thorn m42 and that was the only one of these type i ever got to turn the rest where solid

good quality ball valves do not leak.

yes they do. doesnt matter who makes them.

Only ones that tend not too are the ancient old ball ones with the single slot for a plain screwdriver.

most new ones leak like a fountain as soon as you touch them!

And the new gate type tend to pass!!

someone told me that once, they have leaked for me. i dont even bother trying anymore. i just bung the system.

the good thing about gate valves is you can repair them if they leak. doesnt really matter to me that they pass as i just bung the system if the do, or snatch it.
