Just a general query. What is the reason for lead free solder. Is this a requirement for gas systems ? Cheers

Is the reason for lead free just the general trend not to use lead for environmental reasons ?

Yorkshire (lead) solder fittings can be used on gas systems ?

Leaded can be used on gas. Yorkshire solder ring fittings are lead free.

The reason all solder initially contained lead is that lead softens at a lower temperature and also runs easier.

I use Leaded on all gas work and Lead free on all water work. It virtually guarantees a joint on the gas side of things.

It seems to be part of a general move to remove lead from the enviroment.

Lead is also being removed from electronic components with the plating of component connections moving towards tin or gold with no added lead.
Our company's electronic component catalogues are gradually being updated to only include lead free items.

When we eventually change to unleaded solder in electronics some of the problems I've heard about is that the solder doesn't wet the surface so well and a bad joint will not have the characteristic dull finish.
