leaking cast iron down pipe is showing signs of a leak feom near the top as you can see from the green colour on the wall. there must be a leak at the back and wonder how i can go about fixing. the pipe is pretty tight against the wall

Ladder up and eyes on really.
Assuming water is getting into hopper head properly cast of that type and age is known to rust out at the back,.
Also looks like you have a gutter joint leak as well, at that age original join would have been made with paint/putty bolted together.
Chances are bolt rusted out and joint cracked.
