Hi, can anybody please advise?

I have a direct hot water cylinder (vented) which has a top immersion and a bottom one for economy 7. I replaced the bottom element but because the draincock was facing in the wrong direction - inaccessible!!!
i had to remove the top element to syphon off water resulting in the gasket breaking up and a leak! I picked the bits of old gasket out but the threaded flange with the 2.1/4" internal thread keeps spinning when trying to undo very large nut which is securing it to tank. It appears to be held internally by 3 legs pulling up on inside of tank - is this a surrey or essex flange? How can i remove this in order to replace with another?

Thanks in advance,

Gary.
