Sorry, what's a "u" joint?

If it's a compression fitting then tighten it slightly.

If it's a solder joint, then no quick fixes I'm afraid
 
If its a solder joint then your best to drain down the system at least to below where the joint is.

You can freeze it so long as you can do it far enough away that the heat from soldering does not melt the ice plug, but you will have to cut a new section of pipe in as you cannot solder with water in the pipe
 
I've had a little leak on the hot water discharge from the boiler just downstream of the pump, its copper piping soldered. I've had pretty good luck with self fusing tape (can be bought from B&Q/ScrewFix) for a fiver and would do a pretty good temporary repair.
