LED Shower Niche

Yes totally accepted, if taken to the 'no load' situation the efficiency has to be zero by simple definition. I did go through some experimentation a while back when a previous member insisted the efficiency of SMPSs was constant across input voltages. I don't believe I kept a no load record but do recall it was very dependant on supply voltage.
It appears I did record off load consumption
The 1st is a 65W laptop PSU costing ~5W off load
The 2nd is a 13.5 and either 2, 3 or 4A (we used all 3 at work) costing ~12W off load, with a 21W bulb as a load (1.8A@12V) I'll make a guess at ~[email protected] or ~60-70% efficient and demonstrates the PSU consumes a fairly constant power, However I've never encountered those running warm which I'd expect at that power

I can't make similar estimations for the PC supply as I didn't record the bulbs current at 19V and I'll not guess so far above design voltage which certainly does run warm.

Ceiling voids aren't air tight.

It's quite neat looking, but do you want it on show?

No - probably not. It's rather expensive for a plastic enclosure that size.

People have been putting supplies like that above ceilings without enclosures for years, and ones putting out 10x as much power when sold for halogen lighting, to no ill effect. They too would have contravened the manufacturers instructions on EMC compliance.

I've been giving Thermopanel a hard time because they ought to have done a better job of designing and manufacturing an integrated product, not just sourcing a collection of components to turn their plain shelves into illuminated ones and leaving their customers to figure out how to install it all.

If it were me, I'd fix the supply to a ceiling joist and put a junction box hard up against it to enclose the unsheathed mains cables.

Great thanks for all the help

Totally agree with you the kit is poor on the electrical side,

Wagobox is a good idea, cheers

Yeah its a bit expensive and bulky that vented enclosure, I think its best to use a small access panel instead as we have other equipment i.e the bathroom fan / vent light transformer and the kinetic receiver for the downlights.

Access panels doors are generally filmsy / not draught proof so heat would escape I guess so can't see much issue with overheating.

Thanks again

Normally do this with 1 watt leds designed for external use.

Drivers in the loft.

I'm not aware of such yet, certainly not heard from the trades of problems, not like the decline of other quality products such as MK

That power supply is designed by Meanwell, not made by them, and it's made in China. Quite possibly the eebyjeeby products on Aliexpress are the same, but with lower profit margins.

Not all companies allow their products to become dumbed down during the manufacturing process, equally not all products made in China are poor quality.

Why do you believe it is not made by them? They seem to have two factories in China (PRC).

Thank you for this, I knew their excellent products are likely to come from China but it hadn't occurred to me they are based there, for some reason I thought they were an American company.

For what it's worth I have a stock of low end LED stage lights, when the PSUs fail I automatically replace them with a MW alternative where possible which it seems is a normal/standard surgery within the entertainment environment.

Why do you believe it is not made by them?

Because the device says it was designed by them, not that it was manufactured by them.

TBF, it was a assumption that if a company manufactured a product they would say so.
