Its correct that he could expect some discount if he entered a guilty plea : http://www.cps.gov.uk/legal/s_to_u/sentencing_-_general_principles/#a17 but its not a given. The reason the court enters a not guilty plea, is that you don't actually have a trial as such if you plead guilty. The prosecution no longer has to prove their case and the focus is more on mitigation for sentencing.
