HELP, i am fitting a new light fitting in the kitchen but there are only two wires coming out of the ceiling.which of the three(LIVE,NEUTRAL&EARTH)should i connect these two wires to? also the two wires are the same colour. all help would be grateful, thanks.

Do you mean you have two cables (2core & earth) coming out of the ceiling?

This doesn't sound correct, where do the brown cables connect to at the other end? Are they double insulated?

What kind of lamp was fitted previously, and how was it connected?

Is there a connector block shoved up in the ceiling void?
Someone might have replaced a ceiling rose with chocbloc and pushed up through ceiling, seen it before.

If this were the case, then the blues would have to be live loop, and the browns one a live the other a neutral. Unlikely, no?

Who knows what horrors are up there
I've come across some real nightmares around here, most done with good intentions, the worst is when the customer hasnt a clue about cables and uses bell wire or something that was hanging around/leftover or used in desperation to 'get it working'.
Cant advise brianp anymore without more info or actually seeing the job (not likely unless he lives in glos) but generally these things have a simple solution. :)
Hope its a like for like replacement, could be a 'P'eed off job in a kitchen otherwise.

Talking of bellwire, my worst was an EC14 on a TNS sheath with bellwire from the clamp to the MET.

Funnily enough, the EFL was the best I've found on TNS at 0.11!

But how much fault current would that carry? :(

One big length of fusewire eh?
Is some cpc better than none?
The low impedence is great for operating doorbells though

thanks for your help, but i think its best to get someone in who knows what they are doing, cos i aint got a clue.[/img]
