Light indicator for extractor fan

Yes that looks perfect.
Before drilling the hole in the cover, triple check the clearance space behind the intended hole location and that the cable run from the light is clear and not too far away from the terminals.
Will be very exciting to try it out :giggle:

I'd look for a larger diameter one which would likely be more visible and shallower.

And you only need 1.

It looks quite small

There was a similar situation when I moved into this house, the old boy had wired up a neon across the fan power terminals for the downstairs loo so he could see when the fan was left on.
It has since been removed.

An LED version will be the same but it must be a 230v AC one, lead length may affect how it's installed as you have to be able to remove the cover etc.
Perhaps one that is not flat, a round head that, if you can mount it in the fan chassis and simply drill a hole in the fan front for it to poke through may be a better solution.

However, that fan looks old and may well fail before too long anyway, requiring a new fan and starting again.

LEDs can be much brighter than neons, so you might be able to put one inside the case and its light would show through. They run very cool and the fan will provide airflow.

I got a few from a kind 'notter a year or so ago. At the time they were not easy to find on retail.

EEEkkk.... I had not noticed that! 8mm diameter for the head, means the actual light is even smaller. that will be too small high up for him to see anything, especially as he is elderly so his vision isn't great unless he puts his glasses on, which he only do so to read or to watch TV.

thanks for the advice. you are absolutely spot on that it is far too small. i will see if i can find one with a larger LED.

i was thinking of feeding the supply cables through the fan cover before connecting, then the LED can be stuck on to the front cover with glue.

yeah, i was also thinking that the light from the LED may be bright enough to be seen through the grill when the fan is on, but I think i would prefer it is outside the fan, stuck on to the front cover, or even just dangling slightly loose on it won't be a problem.

now to find one with a big enough LED.
