Light switch swap, L1, L2 and 1-way 2-way

Hi folks,

I'm in need of some help with wiring a couple of replacement light switches and hoping you can put me right..

Basically, I've got two switches on the stairs; a single switch at the bottom for the stair lights and a double switch at the top, with one for the stair lights and one for the bathroom lights.

The old switches have L1, L2 and common sockets; the new ones have 1-way, 2-way and common sockets.

I'm attaching some expertly drawn diagrams of the existing wiring (the current switches) and a couple of photos of the new switches. I forgot to draw the earth cable on the first diagram, but it's there in the earth terminal.

I had thought that going L1 to 1-way, L2 to 2-way and copying the connections to the commons and earths would work but apparently not..

Any advice gratefully received!

It should do, you sure you put them in the right places?

Did you take any pictures before you disconnected?

Interesting.. thanks Pete. I wonder now! The bottom one worked, if I remember right, when copying the wiring, but the top one wouldn't work for the stair lights (the 2-way). Some pictures of the wiring before I disconnected, attached

Does the bathroom light work if you remove the 3 core strappers?

It looks correct if your drawings are how it is now, are you sure you didn't mix a brown up maybe?

The brown and blue on the 2 gang switch should come from the same grey cable.

Everything you have said and done seems correct.
Faulty new switch?
Loose connection somewhere?

Thanks all for the responses! I will..

1. Do it again
2. Check again that everything is in the right place and secure
3. If still no dice, try just changing one switch at a time which I guess should help see if one is faulty
4. Report back

Afraid it's going to be a little while before I can get back to it, possibly in the week, but I'll let you know what happens

Your wording/question is a little confusing.

From this, we do not know exactly what does not work.

You wrote "The bottom one worked" - (NOT "is working") -
"but the top one wouldn't work for the stair lights (the 2-way)"

this appears to indicate that the "top one" did not work (properly) in the first place.
The operation of the Bathroom Light was not mentioned.

However, one must presume that you meant
"the two-way light switch at the top now does not control the "Stair Lights" properly".
BUT
"the Bathroom Light works correctly".

(Congratulations on having the "before" photos !)

From your photos (in Post #3), the Bathroom Light is on a "Switch Loop, from the Light (where the "Line" is connected.)
(That Blue wire should be re-designated as a "Switched Line" - at both ends.)

From your "before" photos, the 2-Way switching was as shown below.

It should work correctly IF this is the way in which you have re-connected the wiring.

(That Blue wire is also a "Switched-Line" and should also be re-designated.)
