Hi

I have a ligthing circuit with a 1W switch which has 2 wires running to the Common connection and 1 wire running to the 1W connection.

Could anyone tell me which side is Live ?

Should be the common terminal, in your case the one with two conductors.

A cheap multimeter will confirm.

Hi Gary

I have a multimeter.

If I disconnect the 2 leads from Common then turn the power back on and measure 240Vac between the 2 wires and neutral then this must be the Live supply ?

Cheers

Leave the conductors in the terminal, much safer that way!
Just put the switch in the OFF position and measure AC volts between the common terminal and cpc (earth) if there's one present.
Switching the switch on and off should have no effect to the voltage which should read somewhere in the region of 230v. This would indicate a permanent live.
Now measure AC volts between L1 and cpc, this time you should see the voltage switch from 0 to 230v as you operate the switch, this is a switched live.
