.... however, be aware of the fact that, if you were to run a separate earth to the light fitting (from wherever) as a single-conductor cable, unless that cable were 'mechanically protected' (which it wouldn't be) it would have to have a minimum size of 4mm².

Hi, no it does not have to follow the supply cable or go back to the CU, you can pack up an earth from another lighting point. If you have a continuous cpc in the supply cable is it not possible to extend it?

Sorted... Managed to dig the cable out of the glue and get a connection to the earth wire... Thanks all.
