Liquid Mercury Controlled Switch

Sounds like it's oxidized and/or dissolved the metal off the electrodes. There's no way to reverse this. You need a new one. If you can't get one you'll have to employ a little ingenuity. How about a ball bearing rolling onto a pair of wires? Alternatively, if you're any good at electronics, try a ball bearing rolling into a slotted opto switch.
 
If my Sparky relative can't get one the correct size, he has alternative automatic switches to use instead. A replacement tube would have made things alot simpler.
