I had the house reworked a few years ago and the porch light has never worked since and I have only now got around to looking at it.

Using a multimeter on the switch I'm getting N-E 244v, L-E 244v and N-L 0v. I've checked the continuity of the switch and it seems to work ok.

I assume in need to trace the switch wire back to where it meets the light wire which it still old red and black wire and check and rewire it correctly?

Thanks

Paul

Where exactly are you connecting your multimeter? Most switches don't have a neutral, just a live and switched live.

Was the light switch on or off when you ran the tests. I take it you've checked the light bulb, and made sure that the wires are connected properly in the light holder.

One imagines that it was 'on'. If what the OP is calling 'N' was, in fact, the switched live, the results he got are exactly as would be expected with the switch 'on' (both sides of switch at 244V relative to earth and 0V across the closed switch).

Kind Regards, John
